Captain Nemo (nemo
(Latin) - no one, nobody) debuted in Jules
Verne's 1870 novel 20,000
Leagues Under the Sea as a rather nebulous figure who has become
a piratical submariner. In Mysterious
Island, published in 1874, we learn that Nemo was originally
an Indian prince who participated in the failed Sepoy rebellion
against the British and has lived in exile ever since. He is an
embittered genius who has forsaken all national allegiances to indulge
his scientific interests (and piratical pursuits) throughout the
seas of the world. |

I believe that the aloof and self-contained character
in LXG is a faithful representation of the character originally
created by Jules Verne. |
